New species discovered in the depths?

On November 3, 2022, at the end of a mission to map the Coco Islands marine park, scientists from Museum Victoria Research announced that they had collected some extremely rare fish from the depths. Some of these fish could be as yet unknown species.

Located more than 2,700 kilometers off the coast of Australia, the Cocos Islands have never before been mapped. After 35 days at sea, the scientific expedition led by the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Organisation not only mapped the depths of the Cocos Islands Marine Park, but also took deep-sea samples using a net.

These samples enabled scientists to bring numerous abyssal fish to the surface. Among them is a completely blind, translucent eel that appears to have never been recorded before. Most of the species brought to the surface live in the depths of the oceans, where darkness reigns. Some of these species use bioluminescence as a hunting technique, while others like the tripod fish use their long appendages as stilts to catch their prey.
